My name is Yewande Olanrewaju and I am from Nigeria. I am currently living in the US with my family. I worked with the ministry of health in Nigeria as a Health Educator/Community Health Worker. In the U.S. I earned an associate degree in science and a certificate as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). I am not currently working but I have worked as a Nursing Aide. Strong Beginnings employs community health workers (CHW) to meet with parents in their homes or other convenient locations to offer social support, education and encouragement throughout their pregnancies and the first 18 months of their babies’ lives. The CHWs work with nurses and social workers and connect families to needed resources.
Program participants also have access to behavioral health services through individual counseling and weekly support groups. Breastfeeding support groups and numerous parenting and education programs are offered to the community at large.
Our Strong Fathers fatherhood initiative offers individual support for male partners, weekly discussion groups for men, and father-child activities. The Padres Fuertes initiative offers services to Spanish-speaking men.

At the Michigan Primary Care Association (MPCA), I work with MPCA’s Enabling Services network including supporting health center outreach, enrollment, CHW and other enabling services staff. I also take a very active role in our new partnerships with Medicaid health plans where health centers will be providing CHW capacity and services to support joint efforts/goals on patient engagement.

I am the program supervisor for CARE Recovery United Community Center in Fraser, Michigan. Having my Community Health Worker certification has been a huge asset in my role in helping those with Substance Use Disorder and who are facing other challenges in making change.
As Community Health Workers, we are able to assist individuals and families in linking with community resources and providing assistance in overcoming barriers in their lives. We are a listening ear and are dedicated to helping others to ensure an adequate resolution to their concerns. My career as a CHW is at MidMichigan Community Health Services in Houghton Lake MI. Here I work in the Substance Use Disorder unit and I my job title is, Peer Recovery Coach and Community Health Worker for the facility. I help patients to find pathways to recovery, make recovery plans and relapse prevention. We set goals and work on coping skills. They somethings just need to talk things out. I find and provide resources for all patients and make community connections.
With transportation having not been available for our seniors and our community
